We are located south of Hartford, South Dakota just minutes west of Sioux Falls. The 40-acre property has everything needed to build an outstanding retriever. A large, mowed training field for drill work, an area to throw landmarks and handling hills with elevation change and cover for upland training. A swim by pond just outside the kennel for swimming lessons. The big pond has points and islands, swimming and splash water to replicate any factors a dog might face hunting or during a test or trial. We will never stop making improvements to our training ground so your dog will be ready for anything that could happen in the field.
Our mission is to offer the best retriever training experience for you and your dog. We take pride in running a clean and organized business, ensuring your dog gets the most out of his or her time here with us. Safety and welfare of the dogs is our #1 priority: from the kennels and airing yards to the trucks and trailers.
We feed Purina pro plan performance 30/20, this food is one of the best on the market. We have been a Purina Pro Club members for a long time and they do a lot for our dog sports. If you have a young dog, you wish to keep on puppy food or a dog on a strict diet we can make accommodations for your dog.
During your dog’s training we will follow Mike Lardy’s program. This program has been proven throughout the years. It focuses on a mentored relationship with the dog. Like a coach getting the best out of its players. Teaching is our priority not testing or timelines. We have several different bird suppliers in the area to train with real birds. You can’t build a bird dog without birds. From pigeons for puppies to pheasants and ducks, having contact with live birds is something that separates us from the other trainers in the area.
Our training program also includes detailed one-on-one training to ensure that you understand the training your dog has received. I’m building the car; I need to teach you how to drive it. To me, this is extremely important because you, as the owner, need to have a solid understanding of what your dog is capable of, and how to get the most out of your dog when they return home.
Patriot Retrievers came about through my love for the retriever games. I fell in love with the sport and the process of training dogs. I started training dogs in 2008, and have been obsessed with it ever since.
We live on and own our training grounds therefore we take great pride and care in our land and constantly making improvements. I named it Patriot Retrievers because I am still active in the Military. I’ve been a patriot my whole life, starting at a very young age and with 23 years of service for the South Dakota Army National Guard, I couldn’t think of a better name.
Future for the property to include more set ups available. 10 Year plan- to have technical water on the big pond and another built. Goal for the next 2-4 years is to be competitive with my personal dogs in the field trial games although that is not every client’s expectation. I want to grow this business and would love to be known nationwide, having dogs brought in from all over the country.
